Abstract:
English is used almost all the people in different parts of the world and
become an international language. To be able to master the English language, first
we must know the most basic vocabulary because if we do not own or do not have
the vocabulary, then we will be confused in conveying or expresssing our intent in
English.
The purpose of this thesis is to know whether the use of short story can
develop student’s vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of MTs Negeri
Purworejo. The researcher took one class (VIII A) as the sample of the research.
The researcher used a purposive sampling technique because of limited time. To
analyze the data the researcher used quantitative method. The instrument was pretest
and post-test. The result was 43 as the mean of pre-test and 69 as the mean of
post-test. To know the Ho is rejected or accepted, the researcher consulted to the
t-test with the degree of freedom (df) is 34 and the level of significance 5%. The
result gained the t-test was higher than t-table (5.22>2.045).
Based on the research above, it can be concluded that the use of reading
short story can develop students’ vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students
of MTs Negeri Purworejo in the academic year of 2013/2014.
