Abstract:
The undertaking of the present experiment research was mainly intended
to figure out whether or not team game tournament technique can improve the
subjects’ speaking skill. The subject of the present study was the second grade
students of SMA N 9 Purworejo in academic year 2014/2015 that consisted of 2
classes.
In this study, the writer took quantitative method. It means the writer made
experimental of teaching speaking by using team game tournament technique
(experiment class in XI MIA I), and without using team game tournament
technique (control class in XI MIA II), then the writer gave them speaking test
(pre test and post test). The writer used purposive sampling technique to choose
experiment class and control class.
The result shows that the mean of pretest of experiment class was 61.80
and the result of posttest was 77.80; while the mean of pretest of control class was
53.00 and the result of posttest was 73.00. It means students’ achievement in
experiment class is better than students’ achievement in control class. The result
of t-value analysis is 3.76, and the result of t-table analysis is 2.086. It means that
t-value is higher than t-table, which is 3.76 < 2.086. So, Ha is accepted.
According to the result, the writer concluded that using team game
tournament in teaching of hortatory exposition text at second grade students’ of
SMA N 9 Purworejo in academic year 2014/2015 is effective. The process of
teaching and learning is well enough in the approach. Based on the result of the
research, it is suggested for teacher to continue teaching by using team game
tournament technique in teaching speaking, for students to always try to improve
their speaking skill, for school to support the facility to get the goal of teaching
learning activity, and for the other researcher, it is recommended to implement
team game tournament technique in teaching other types of text.
