Abstract:
The objective of this study were to describe whether Reciprocal Teaching
is effective or not in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri
5 Purworejo in the academic year of 2015/2016.
In this study, the writer took quantitative method. It means the writer made
experimental of teaching reading by using Reciprocal Teaching (experiment class
in VIII A), and without using Reciprocal Teaching (control class in VII B), then
the writer gave them reading test (pre-test and post-test). The writer used
purposive sampling technique to choose experiment class and control class. This
research was a quantitative reseacr, so it needs data analysis. The data analysis is
related to the computation answering problem statement and hypothesis testing
presebted.
The result of this study showed that there is effectiveness in teaching
reading by using Resiprocal Teaching technique. According to the result, the
mean of pre-test of experiment class was 76.09 and the result of post-test was
86.09; while the mean of pre-test of control class was 76.25 and the result of posttest
was 81.41. It means students’ achievement in experiment class is better than
students’ achievement in control class. The number of samples (n1 = 32 and n2 =
32) and the level of significance 0.002, the n of Z-value is 3.14. The result of zvalue
analysis is 3.14 , and the result of z-table analysis is 3.14. The result of ztest
proved that z-value is higher than z-table (3.14 < 1.96). Thus, it can be
inferred that Ha is accepted, it means that the use of Reciprocal Teaching is
effective in Teaching Reading at the Eight Grade of SMP Negeri 5 Purworejo.
