Abstract:
English as an international language is used for communication in most
activities and field in the world. In Indonesia, English is taught to the students of
elementary, junior, and senior high school, and even to university students as one
of their subjects.
The research is conducted to find how effective Modelling The Way
Strategy for teaching descriptive text for improving writing ability of the seventh
grade students of junior high school. The research is carried out at SMP N 26
Purworejo in April 2013.The population of the study is seventh grade students.
The sample of the study is class A class as experimental group that consist of 32,
and D class as control group that consists of 32 students. Dealing with the
research instrument of collecting the data, the researcher makes some steps: (1)
giving pretest to both experimental and control class; (2) applying the treatment to
the experimental class and giving material to the control class; (3) giving post-test
to both experimental and control class. To analyze the data, the researcher applies
descriptive and inferential analyze using t-test.
The result of the data computation indicates that t-score is 3.15 It means
that t-score of this study is higher than the t-value on the t-table. The t-value on
the t-table is 1.999 It means that the hypothesis is accepted.
Based on the result of the study, using Modelling the Way Strategy is the
effective for the students in writing a descriptive text. The researcher suggested
that the use of Modelling the Way Strategy can be an alternative way to teach the
language learner, especially to improve students’ writing ability. The students are
expected to be more active during the teaching learning- process, so it can make
the students interested and motivated in learning English. Moreover, they will get
a better result.
