Translation is one of the abilities which should be possessed by the
English students. By this, they will be able to know and understand the meaning
of the sentence in a text, discourse, etc. To know the meaning of the sentence in
English, the students have to recognize many words first. Many words in English
are learned in parts of speech. There are nine of parts of speech, they are: noun,
pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, article, and
interjection. One of the parts of speech which must be mastered by the students is
verb. Because verb is the most complex parts of speech, they should have the
ability to master it well.
In this thesis, the researcher tries to find out the students’ mastery of verb
as part of speech for the first grade students of senior high school, to find out the
students’ ability of translation for the first-grade students of senior high school,
and to know whether there is positive and significant influence of the students’
mastery of verb as part of speech toward their translation ability for the first grade
students of senior high school. The population of this research is the first grade
students of SMA N 4 Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013. The number
of sample is 62 from the total population 188. To take the sample, the researcher
uses simple random sampling technique. This study involves two variables: verb
as part of speech mastery (X) and translating ability (Y) where independent
variable (X) influences toward dependent variable (Y). This research includes the
correlation study with the experimental method. To collect the data, the researcher
uses a test. There are two kinds of test. Those tests are verb as part of speech
mastery and translation ability. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses the
descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
The result of the descriptive analysis shows that the mastery of verb as
part of speech forthe first-grade students of SMA N 4 Purworejo is good (Mean =
65,79, SD = 6,13) and their translation ability is categorized as good (Mean =
77,98, SD = 4,84). The result of the inferential analysis shows that there is a
positive and significant influence of the students’ mastery of verb as part of
speech toward their translation ability, with the correlation coefficient of 0,616. It
was compared with with the respondent of 62 with the level of significance
5% was 0,254. It means that was higher than , so, the null
hypothesis was rejected and the working one was accepted. Thus, it can be |
