Abstract:
The purpose of this research are to describe the level of students‟ writing
ability after taught by picture sequences and to find out whether using picture
sequences is effective or not for teaching narrative text to improve students‟
writing ability in the eleventh grade of MAN Kutowinangun in 2012/2013
academic year.
In this research the researcher took 63 students as the sample. As the
experimental group, the researcher used class XI.IPA.4 which consists of 31
students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the researcher took 32 students of class
XI.IPA.3. Then, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The
researcher taught narrative text by using Picture Sequences to experimental group
and common way to the control group. The researcher then statistically analyzed
the data by using t-test.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching narrative
text using Picture Sequences is effective. As the fact, the result of t-value was
4.526. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the value of t-table was 2.000, the
computation showed that t-value was higher than t-table, which was 4.526>2.000.
The effectiveness of picture sequences also can be seen from score gained by
control group and experimental group after given treatment. The mean of score
experimental group was 74.322 and it was belonge to good category. While the
control group was 67.000 and it was belonged to good category. It can be
concluded the scrore from experimental group was higher than control group.
Based on the result of t-test findings, it can be reference for teachers to use picture
sequences as media in teaching writing especially narrative text in order to get the
higher students achievement. So, it can be stated that the hypothesis “the use of
picture sequences in teaching narrative text to improve students‟ writing ability in
the eleventh grade of MAN Kutowinangun in 2012/2013 academic year is
effective” is accepted.
