dc.description.abstract Language is concerned with communication between humans. Communication should be made as clearer as possible to avoid misperception and misunderstanding between the speaker and the listener. Grice’s invented cooperative principle, which consists of maxim. There are four maxims, namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. Sometimes the speakers are aware to break the maxim rather than to say directly. Flouting maxim occurs this way. It generates an implicature. It is sometimes hard to understand because it is less or more informative This research analyzed the kind of flouting maxim and implicature of the speaker in the movie “Mona Lisa Smile”. The aim of this research is to find out kind of maxims are flouted in the movie. In conducting research, Descriptive qualitative method is used. The data are explained descriptively. The data are taken from the dialogue of the character in the movie. The steps are watching the movie, downloading the script movie, taking the utterance, transcribing the data, and giving coding each datum. There are some procedures in analyzing the data. They are describing the data in dialogue form, describing the context, analyzing the flouted, and analyzing the implicature. The result of the data analysis showed that the flouting maxim is dominated by the maxim of quantity. It flouted 15 times or 60%. It flouted by giving information that is more informative. The maxim of quality flouted 1 time or 4%. It occurs because the speaker giving untrue information which is lack of adequacy. The maxim of relation flouted 5 times or 20%. It flouted by giving irrelevant respond. The maxim of manner of manner flouted 4 times or 16%. It flouted because of giving such not brief information or ambiguous. The speakers intentionally flout the maxim to bring the hearer to find the implicit meaning inside their utterance. The implicature is always related to the context where the context the dialogue occurs. Finally, the researcher hopes this research will be useful. For English teachers are expected to pay attention to the discourse of flouting maxim in all kinds of communication especially in speaking and listening English. For English learners, by understanding it, it would enrich their ability to understand communication especially in speaking and listening English perfectly and to make a good conversation to the others. For further researcher, it is suggested that this study should be continued in the future. This study also reflects an example of how applied linguistics by using Grice’s cooperative principle can be used to analyze literature. It is suggested to become analyst in linguistics in different objects. en_US
