Abstract:
The objectives of this research is to find out whether teaching reading using
Phonetic Transcription is effective to increase the students’ reading aloud ability.
This research is a quantitative research with experimental because the researcher
does experiment and gives treatment to find out the effectiveness of using
phonetic transcription to increase the students’ reading aloud ability. The
researcher took 60 students as a sample. As the experimental group, the researcher
used class VIII.3, which consists of 31 students. Meanwhile, as the control group,
the researcher took 29 students of class VIII.1. Then the researcher gave pre-test
and post-test to both classes. The researcher taught reading by using phonetic
transcription to the experimental group and commonly way to the control group.
And then the researcher analyzed the data using t-test separated polled variance.
After analyzing data, the researcher concludes that teaching reading using
phonetic transcription is effective to increase the students’ reading aloud ability.
As the fact, the result of t-value is 6.345. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the
value of t-table is 2.000. The result of the computation shows that t-value is higher
than t-table, it is 6.345 > 2.000. Another facts show that the media used is
effective. It is shown by the mean of the experimental group that is higher than the
mean of the control group. In the experimental group, the mean is 76.16 and the
control group is 68.86.
Based on the result finding, it can be shown that the students’ reading aloud
ability increased. The students more interested to read the text because they
become know the phonetic transcription of the words. They can improve their
pronunciation and improve their speaking ability. The researcher hopes that this
thesis would help the teacher, the students, and the other researcher.
