Abstract:
This final project is experimental research. The aim of the study was to
increase students' interest in learning and applying effective strategies and
beneficial for students to improve their proficiency in the English language in
particular to improve speaking ability to the tenth grade students of SMK Negeri 8
Purworejo. It is expected that the result of the study will provide a deeper
understanding of the use pair work technique as a teaching. Technique used by the
teachers in teaching and learning process. One of the appropriate technique that
can be functioned to improve the students’ speaking ability is pair work technique.
In this study, experimental research was used to obtain the information
related to the research problems. The samples of this study are two classes. The
first class is Busana as the experimental group and the second classes Tsm A as
an control group. Both of classes consist of 33 students. In this study test is
conducted to find out whether there are significant chances in experimental group
after being given pair work because participants have similar chance to be chosen.
The spoken test was used to know students’ improvement that. The researcher
tested the students’ speaking achievement by giving pre-test and post-test. In
collecting the data, the researcher used test as the instrument. This research is a
quantitative research, so it needs a data analysis. This analysis is related to the
computation in answering the problem statement and hypothesis testing presented.
The statistics used in this research is the t-test.
The result of this study showed that teaching speaking by using Pair Work
can improve the students’ speaking ability. Based on the result of post-test control
group and experimental group, the mean score of the post-test control group was
63. Meanwhile, the mean score of post-test experimental group was 72. It means
that there was an improvement on the students’ speaking ability after giving
treatment. In addition, the result of the computation of t-value (t-test) is 6.290.
The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is 2.042. So the null
hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and hypothesis alternative (Ha) was accepted. It
means using pair work is effective in improving speaking ability.
