Abstract:
Language is common means to communicate. English Language is term in our
life now, because English language as an International language. And English became
the important subject in our country, so every student is hoped to competence in
mastery English language. To mastery the English subject the students should be
mastery the meaning every word in English, because in English language there are some
words usually have more than one meaning. Therefore, the researcher tries to find out
the distinction meaning it, or usually called the ambiguity meaning in English language.
The researcher analyzes the News Item text consisted in English textbook “Look
Ahead” used by the first grade students of senior high school.
The researcher used the descriptive qualitative research of this thesis. The
researcher used this method because, she analyze the data from the textbook. She takes
some text from textbook and analyzes which one that follows the lexical and structural
ambiguity
The result of the research, she is found 11 ambiguous words and phrases. She
found 5 words lexical ambiguity represents 45.45% included noun 60% and verb 40%.
While 6 phrases for structural ambiguity represents 54.54% included noun phrases
66.67%, Adjective phrase 16.67% and Prepositional phrase 16.67%. More dominant
between lexical or structural ambiguity is structural ambiguity there are 54.54%. It
shows us that the writers of this text like to use some phrasing that its forms are unclear.
So, the researcher thinks as a writer should be more careful in diction of the words and
when the writer using phrases.
