Abstract:
As a developing country, we use English as the first foreign language.
According to Ramelan (1992; 5), it has to be admitted that most learning problems
are caused by different elements found between two languages. This research is
conducted as an effort to help the stakeholders of English teaching learning in
solving some of these problems.
In this thesis, the writer has two questions. The first is how far the mastery
of making direct and indirect speech made by the first year students of sudirman
Islamic state senior high school of purworejo and the second one is what types of
error made by them.
This study is purposed to know the ability and the difficulties of the
students by the identifying the grammatical error in making direct and indirect
speech. The test- takers of this study the 1st year students of sudirman Islamic
state senior high school of purworejo in the academic year of the 2012/2013”.
Hopefully this study will be useful for the teacher to pay more attention in the
teaching of direct and indirect speech. And for the students, it can help them to
understand the common errors in making direct and indirect speech so they will
not make the same error in making such sentences.

To collect data, the writer used essay test. For accomplishing this study,
thirty students were asked to do the test in 90 minutes, including 25 test items.
The data were analyzed by using error analysis technique. The data were
classified based on the surface strategy taxonomy. The grammatical errors are
classified into four types. They are omission, addition, misformation, and
misordering (Dulay, 1982: 150).
The findings of the analysis show that first: the 1st year students of
Sudirman Islamic state senior high school of Purworejo have got 68 % in
mastering direct and indirect speech (fair). In the statement type, they have got 67
% (fair); Command type 71 % (fair); Question type 67% (fair); second; they are
some error of students in use of direct and indirect speech in writing. The students
occasionally omit some grammatical morphemes; add some items which must not
appear in the right utterance, supply incorrect morpheme or structure, and disorder
in contractions that require a reversal of word – order rules.
