Abstract:
Grammar is an important part to be learnt in the process of acquiring
language in order to help someone to use the language grammatically and
meaningfully. Many students consider that grammar is more difficult than other
skills. Grammar has a lot of element; one of them is Adjective Clause. Adjective
Clause is one of component of grammar and one of topic which is taught in Senior
High School. Moreover , it is very important for the students to be able express
and understand about adjective clause.
This thesis is intended to know whether the students get difficulties in
learning adjective clause or not. It is also to know the students’ difficulties and its
causes in learning adjective clause. In this study, the researcher uses descriptive
qualitative method. She uses human instrument as the main instrument. She uses
test and questionnaire as the supporting instruments to collect the data. The
subject of this study is the eleventh grade of SMA N I Mirit Kebumen in the
academic year of 2012/2013. She takes 28 students as the sample of the study.
According the data of the test result, most of students get difficulties in
learning adjective clause. it is obtained that there are 100% students who had
difficulties at the word order adjective clause, 85,71% students who confused in
using between which, whose, and that, 75,57% students who confused in using
between who and whom, 71,42% students who confused in using between when
and where, and 53, 57% students who not familiar all about adjective clause
It means that the most of students have difficulties in learning adjective clause.
Based on the finding of this research, it can be concluded that the eleventh
grade students’ of SMA N I Mirit have more difficulties in the word order and
usage adjective clause. It is because lack of understanding about how to ordering
word adjective clause and lack of knowledge about adjective clause.
