Abstract:
The type of this research is quantitative and using experimental research.
The design of this research was a true experiment design with pre-test and posttest
procedure. The total population is 54 students of the eleventh grade of SMK
TI Kartika Cendekia Purworejo in academic year 2012/2013. The total sample is
54 students divided into two groups, the experimental group is 27 students
(XITKJ) and the control group is 27 students (XI Multimedia). In collecting data,
the researcher using reading test. The pre-test and post-test of reading consist 20
items of multiple choice. Pre-test is to know the ability the students before the
usage CIRC as a method and the Post-test is to know the ability of students after
the usage of CIRC as a method.
The result of the research finds that the mean score of pre-test in
experimental group is 41.88 and the mean score of post-test is 82.88. While the
mean score of pre-test in control group is 49.42 and the mean score of post-test is
70.00. Then the value of t-test is 4.55 and the t-table is 2.000. Then the researcher
consults the critical value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance
and the degree of freedom is 2.000.The result of computation shows that t-value is
higher than t-table, that is 4.55>2.000 so it can be stated that the hypothesis
“Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) as a Method to
improve students’ reading comprehension is accepted
