Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of word splash strategy in
teaching English vocabulary to the fifth grade of SDN Jemur Kebumen. It
supposes to motivate students to learn English actively by using word splash
strategy. Students also encouraged to get long memorizing of the words and their
meaning.
This research is called pre-experimental design research. The population of this
research is the fifth grade students of SDN Jemur Kebumen in the academic year
2013/2014. The total numbers of the population in this research is 40 students.
There are two classes fifth grade of SDN Jemur Kebumen, VA class consists of 20
students and VB class consists of 20 students, the researcher chooses one class is
VB class. The sampling technique which is used is purposive sampling.
The result of the research shows that word splash strategy can improve the
students’ vocabulary mastery. The result in normality of test the researcher use
calculated Chi-Square. In pre-test, the result of Chi-square value is 9.968, df is 5,
interpretation 0.05, and in chi-square table 11.070, the data is normal because chisquare
value 9.968 < 11.070 chi-square table. In post-test, the result of chi-square
value is 8.534, df is 5, in interpretation 0.05, and in chi-square table 11.070, the
data is normal because chi-square value 8.534 < 11.070 chi-square table.And the
result of t-test is 6.956, degree of freedom (df) is 19, interpretation in 0.05, and ttable
is 1.729. It means that hypothesis of the research is accepted, because t-test
is 6.956 > from t-table is 1.729. Word splash strategy is effective, in teaching
vocabulary to the fifth grade of SDN Jemur Kebumen in Academic Year
2013/2014.
