Abstract:
The research is aimed: (1) to describe how is the pronunciation error of
Javanese students of the first grade of SMA 4 Purworejo in the academic year
2013/2014 and (2) what are the types of errors and (3) to find out the dominant
error made by Javanese students of the first grade of SMA Purworejo in the
academic year 2013/2014”.
The population of this study was the first grade of SMA 4 of Purworejo in
the Academic Year of 2013/2014. The instrument used by giving a text that
contains 50 words. The researcher asks the learner one by one to read the text, then
record their voiced. In analyzing the data, error analysis is used. There were four
steps: transcribing the students’ pronunciation into the phonetic transcriptions,
grouping the students’ errors in pronouncing English into separate divisions,
employing the percentage descriptive analysis to count all error and interpreting
the result of the data analysis.
The result of the analysis shows that students are considered “good” in
pronouncing English words. The percentage of each error in pronouncing English
shows that in substitution= (74,68%), in omission = (31,64%), in insertion =
(24,05%) and in confusion using the word, = (34,17%). The dominant error made
by Javanese student is substitution = 74,68%. The researcher suggests for treating
the students’ errors by giving a lot of drills and practices relating to the
pronunciation so they can acquire the second language/target language well
without interference of Javanese.
