dc.description.abstract Code mixing and code switching are terms of sociolinguistics which commonly occur in bilingual and multilingual societies where the function of the languages cannot be clearly separated. The objectives of this research are to identify the types and the functions of code mixing and code switching on twitter timeline of class 8C of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo and its application in language teaching. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The data analysis is taken from the participants’ tweet on their Twitter timeline. The analysis of the data is based on theories of Holmes, Wardhaugh, Saville- Troike, Muysken, and Apple and Muysken. After analyzing the data, the researcher explain about how to applicate it for teaching English especially in teaching speaking and vocabulary skill. The findings of this research are as follows: insertion of CM is 28 (27,3%), alternation of CM is 9 (12%), congruent lexicalization is 4 (5,3%), situational CS is 1 (1,3%), metaphorical CS is 2 (2,7%), inter-sentential CS is17 (22,7%), intra-sentential CS is 9 (12%), and emblematic CS is 5 (6,7%). The researcher also observes functions of code mixing and code switching. Those are 7 referential functions, 3 directive functions, 10 expressive functions, 6 Phatic functions, 3 metalinguistic functions, and 1 poetic function. The application of this research can be used as strategy to teach speaking and vocabulary skill. Where the both code help the students to get more understanding about the material given. en_US
