Abstract:
Narrative text is one of texts that has been learned by the students since
they were in tenth grade even they were in junior high school. But, most of them
still confused to mention the language features of Narrative text. The objectives
of this research were to know how far is the students’ understanding in language
features of narrative text and to identify the students’ difficulties in
comprehending the language features of narrative text on the eleventh grade.
The research was conducted on 2nd and 5th April 2014 in MAN 1
Kutowinangun in the academic year 2013/2014. In this research, the researcher
took one class as the sample. The class consists of 32 students. The researcher
used reading test and questionnaire as the instrument of this research. This
research was presented using descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data
instrument, the researcher did some steps. They were: preparing the research
instrument, giving test to the students, collecting students’ worksheet, analyzing
the result of the students’ worksheet and questionnaire, and classifying the result.
To analyze the result of the test, the researcher used descriptive analysis.
The result of this research showed that the students’ understanding in language
features of narrative text at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Kutowinangun in the
academic year 2013/2014 is excellent as the mean score is 82.5. The result of
students’ understanding from reading test as follows; 25 students (78.13%) are
classified into excellent category, 4 students (12.5%) are classified into good
category, 2 students (6.25%) are classified into sufficient category, 1 student
(3.13%) is classified into fairly sufficient category, and there is no student gets
score classified into poor category. The result of the students’ difficulties based on
the questionnaire as follows; the percentage of the difficulty in finding saying
verb, action verb, and thinking verb is 59.38%, the percentage of the difficulty in
finding time conjunction is 40.63%, the percentage of the difficulty in
understanding past tense is 71.88%, the percentage of the difficulty in
distinguishing between time conjunction and connectives is 68.75%.
