Abstract:
This research aims to find out the effectiveness of using reading aloud as
technique in teaching pronunciation. In order to know the effectiveness, the
researcher compares the result of teaching by using common method to the result
of teaching using reading aloud.
This research is called experimental research. The population of this
research is the tenth grade students of SMA N 4 Purworejo in the academic year
2013/2014. The total number of the population in this research is 191 students from
six classes. The sample of this research is 64 students from two classes, X4 consist
of 32 students as the control group, and X5 consist of 32 students as the
experimental group. The instrument is through pronunciation test (reading aloud a
text) which is conducted on April 19th, 2014 for pre-test, and on May 5th, 2014 for
post-test. Statistically, the researcher analyzes the data by using t-test polled variant.
The result of this research found that the use of reading aloud is effective in
teaching pronunciation. In this research, there is positive and significant effect of
using reading aloud in teaching pronunciation. The result compared to the value of
t-table (12.494>1.671). Then, the computation of t-test shows that the Ha is
accepted. The highest score from the whole score – both control and experimental,
and both pre-test and post-test, was 93. It was achieved after they got the treatments
in experimental group. Then, the lowest score was 27. The lowest score was
achieved by the student in control group. After the test, the average scores were
found that the mean pre-test of the experimental group was 53.94, and the
experimental group has mean score 82.25 in post-test. Moreover, the mean pre-test
of the control group was 50.66, while the post-test of control group has mean score
52.94. If the value of t-test is higher than t-table, the alternative hypothesis can be
stated that it is effective to use reading aloud as technique in teaching pronunciation
at the tenth grade students of SMA N 4 Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014.
