Abstract:
Reading is one of four basic skill which learners are required to master if
they want to learn a foreign language. English reading can improve a reader
perception to give a lot of help improve listening, speaking and writing. Reading
is one of the language skills that contribute to the success of language learning.
The aim of the research is to know whether reciprocal teaching method can
improve students reading comprehension for the students of class eleventh grade
students of SMA N 1 Kaliwiro in the academic year 2013/2014.
The researcher applies quantitative method to discuss and find out the
problem appearing in this study. This study can be categorized as experimental
research. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA N
1 Kaliwiro and the researcher took 64 students as the sample which divided into
two classes. The independent variable is the method of teaching, and the
dependent variable is the students’ reading result manifested in the test score. In
getting the data, the researcher used test as an instrument (pre test and post test).
The researcher analyzed the data by using descriptive statistic analysis (mean,
median, modus, SD, and the highest and lowest score) and inferential analysis
(normality test, test of homogeneity and t-test as hypothesis)
The result of the researcher showed reciprocal teaching method is effective
to improve students reading comprehension. The improvement can also be seen
by the result of t-test that is 3.86. Then, the researcher consulted the critical value
on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of freedom
is 2.001. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table is 3.86>2.001.
Related to the result of t-test the mean of post test experimental and control group
is higher than mean score of pre test (71.34>62.65). It means that reciprocal
teaching method is effective to improve reading comprehension at the eleventh
grade students of SMA N 1 Kaliwiro.
