dc.description.abstract Speaking is human needs as a profession demand or in our daily activity as a social creature. Most of students have difficulties to speak English in front of the class. As a technique, ice breaker gives priority to teach cheerfully, enthusiastic. It has purpose to make student interested also build their motivation and confidence to speak English in front of the class. The research is conducted to find out is there effectiveness of using ice breaker in teaching speaking at eighth grade students of SMP N 24 Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. This research was conducted by using experiment design there were pre test, treatment and post test. Two classes were chosen as the sample of this research. They are 26 students from class C as experimental group and 26 students from class D as control group. The researcher used an oral test as the instrument to collect the data. The researcher used t-test formula to make the data analysis. The result of test shows that the t-test is 3.164. The result of the study indicates that ice breaker is effective in teaching speaking. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is 3.164>2.009. It means that Ha is accepted and there is effectiveness of using ice breaker in teaching speaking at eighth grade students of SMP N 24 Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. en_US
