dc.description.abstract |
Speaking is one of the main focuses in the English teaching; to speak
English well is not easy even in Senior High School, it is found that only few
students can speak English well and fluently, although they have learned speaking
English with the same teacher. It happened because every student has different
intelligence. One of Intelligence is Emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence
is the ability to understand the way people feel and react and to use this skill to
make good judgments, to motivate and to avoid or solve problems.
This research is aimed to investigate: (1) the students’ emotional
intelligence of the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 1
Kutowinangun in the academic year 2013/2014 (2) the students’ English speaking
score of the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 1 Kutowinangun in
the academic year 2013/2014 and (3) the influence of students’ emotional
intelligence in their speaking ability of the tenth grade students of State Senior
High School 1 Kutowinangun in the academic year 2013/2014.
This is quantitative research. The research was conducted on 9th until 10th
May 2014. The population was the tenth grade students of State Senior High
School 1 Kutowinangun in the academic year 2013/2014 which consist of 284
students. The sample of this research is 62 students by applying simple random
sampling to collect the sample. The technique of collecting data used the
questionnaire of emotional intelligence and the documentation of English
speaking score by the teacher. This research was presented using descriptive
quantitative method. The normality test was calculated using SPSS 17.00
(Kolmogorov-Sminrov Test). Mean and Standard Deviation were used in
descriptive analysis, while hypothesis testing and regression used in the inferential
analysis.
The results of this research are: (1) the mean of students’ emotional
intelligence score was 301.32 it classified into sufficient category, there were 31
students upper mean and 31 students under mean. (2) The mean of students’
speaking ability was 77.85 classified into good category; there were 29 students
upper mean and 32 students under mean. (3) r-value (0.401) is higher than r table
(0.254) in the significant level of 0.05. , it means that there is positive and
significance influence of the emotional intelligence on the students speaking
ability. Based on regression test, it has known that coefficient of determination
(R) was 0.161; it means that students’ speaking ability is 16.1% affected by their
emotional intelligence. |
