Abstract:
In this modern era, people demand to have more than one language.
Languge as a tool for communication takes important role in our daily activities.
Without communication, we will be left behind. Communication in foreign
language is a bridge to get information, knowledge and culture. Indonesia as a
developing country has realized that English is as an English teacher, we need to
use some media in teaching English. One instructional media that keeps students
interest and active in the lesson is by using Realia.
The objectives of this research are to describe the level of students’ writing
skills after being taught by realia and to know whether, using realia is effective or
not in teaching descriptive text to improve students’ writing skill in the tenth
grade students of MAN Kutowinangun in the academic year 2013/ 2014 .
In this research, the researcher took two classes as the sample. One class
was experimental group ( 32 students) and the other was control group ( 32
students). The instrument used in this thesis, was writing test. To collect the data,
the researcher used pre – test and post – test. The researcher used realia to teach
descriptive text. Statistically, the researcher analyzed the data by using t- test.
The result of t – value was 4.204. Based on the 0.05 significance level, the
value of t- table was 1.9990, the computation showed that t- value was higher than
t- table, which was 4.204>1.9990. .The effectiveness of realia also can be seen
from score gained by experimental group and control group after given treatment.
The mean score gained by experimental group was 76.09 and it was belonged to
good category. While the control group was 66.250 and it was belonged to
sufficient category. It can be concluded the score from experimental group was
higher than control group.
Based on the result of t – test findings, it can be shown reference for
teachers to use realia as media in teaching writing especially descriptive text in
order to get the higher students achievement.
