dc.description.abstract Reading is as a process of communication between a writer and a reader by way of the written and printed words. STAD is one of the cooperative methods which demand the students to learn in group 4-5 members that are mixed in performance level, gender, race, and ethnicity. The objective of this study isto know whether Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) is effective or not on students reading ability of the Eleventh Grade Students of MAN Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. The population of this study is the eleventh grade students of MAN Purworejo. The writer took two classes as the subject of the study. The classes are, XI IPS 1 and XI IPS 2. Both of classes consist of 64 students. They are divided into control class (XI IPS 1)and experimental class (XI IPS 2). A test as the instrument is used to collect the data. The objective of conducting the try out test is to measure the validity, reliability, discrimination power and level of difficulty of the test. The data is computed and it is found out that 25 items were valid. Then the valid items were used for the pre-test and posttest of reading ability item tests in experimental and control class. The result of the study shows that students in experimental class who were taught with using STAD had better achievement than students in control class who were taught without using STAD. The average score of the pre-test of the experimental class was 59.12 and control class was 57.12 the students in the experimental class were then taught using STAD while the students in control class were taught without using STAD. After that they conducted the post test. The average score of the experimental class was 73.62 and the control class was 63. The pre-test and posttest score then were calculated to get the t-test to know whether there was significant difference between the experimental class and control class. The t-test was 7.08 and t-table was 2.000. Then t-test and t-table were compared. The data shows that t-test was higher than t-table. It means that there was significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. From the data above, it can be concluded that the students in experimental class have higher achievement after they were taught by STAD. The data proves that it is effective to use STAD method in improving the students’ reading ability. en_US
