THE ANALYSIS OF OPENING DISCOURSE USED IN CONVERSATION IN THE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEXTBOOK : LOOK A HEAD AND ITS APPLICATION IN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

In a school, most of teachers and students learn English language skills from textbooks. Study openinng discourse is one way to have a good knowledge especially to make a conversation. The researcher focuses on the study of revealing opening discourses used in conversations in the textbook : Look A Head published by Airlangga. Source of the data used in this study was conversations in the textbook. The researcher used a qualitative type of research to conduct this study and the researcher herself as the key instrument. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research to explain each opening discourse. The result of this study was opening discourse that appears in the 259 opening discourse divided in to 19 catagoriesThey are 3 (1,16 %) of term address, 9 (3,47 %) of answer, 5 (1,93 %) of self – identification, 10 (3,86 %) of summon, 5 (1,93 %) of greeting, 12 (4,63 %) of offering, 9 (3,47 %) of acceptance, 39 (15,06 %) of inform statement, 42 (16,21 %) of opine statement, 35 (13,6 %) of identification question, 11 (4,24 %) of polarity question, 18 (6,94 %) of confirming question, 18 (6,94 %) of asking for something / someone, 18 (6,94 %) of thanking, 5 (1,93 %) of apologizing, 5 (1,93 %) of acknowledge, 5 (1,93 % ) of agreeing, 9 (3,47 %) of responding object, 4 (1,54 % ) of declining.The application from the finding of opening discourse found in the conversations used in the Look A Head Textbook, the materials can be applied in teaching speaking skill, especially in expressing opinions and giving opinions in the first semester of eleven grade.
