dc.description.abstract English is an international language which is spoken in international events and used as a medium of transferring information flow on science,technology, and art as well. As a matter of fact, students should be able to perform language skills for i.e listening, reading, speaking and writing. Writing is considered to be difficult subject to the students. But somehow,they must be able to do it. There are some techniques that can be used in teaching English especially in writing, such as written dialogue of films, song lyrics, picture regulations, rule games, and many others. Films encompassthe motion picture industry,the field of film as an art form , and individual motion pictures.Meanwhile, animation can be defined as series of graphics that change over time and / or space. Animation films are one of the options to rebuilt students’ interest to learn English due to many advantages we can get from it. From other research that have been read by the writer, she believes that by using animation films the students will understand about 50% of the materials from what they see and what they hear. In this final project the writer wants to know how well the competence of the eighth grade-students of SMP N 12 Purworejo to the language skills, especially the ability of writing a narrative text. In this case, the writer uses two films they are Brother Bear and Tangled as a reference. There are two basic problems that the writer wants to discuss, they are: what are the students’ difficulties in understanding narrative as one of text types and how is the effectiveness of using animation films at teaching students’ writing ability of narrative text at the eighth grade-students of SMP 12 Purworejo. Since teaching writing of a narrative text by using Brother Bear and Tangled films can help students develop their writing skill, the writer gave them more exercises on writing narrative texts of the films. The objectives of the study are: to know what the students’ difficulties in understanding a narrative text are and to find out how effectiveness uses animation films at teaching students’ writing ability of narrative text at the eighth grade-students of SMP N 12 Purworejo. The writer gives some useful information about a narrative text and teaching writing by using Brother Bear and Tangled films. It will be more interesting for the students to produce a narrative text by listening to the dialogue in the films. The techniques of collecting data were by using observation form, pre-test and post-test.Each of the test consists of 1 test. Distributing a questionnaire was also done with the purpose to answer the questions about the students’ achievement in receiving the material from the writer. The result of the tests shows that the mean score of the post-testof the experimental group is 72.85 and the mean score of the post test of the control group is 64.41. And the t-test result is 4.187 . The result of the study shows that animation films are able to xii improve the students’ writing ability. The t- score is higher than t-table (4.187 > 1.671). It means that the use of animation films, in providing the students with 2 films is effective. en_US
