dc.description.abstract Interpersonal communicationis an important variable in language learning. Interpersonal communication in the learning process implies the existence of the communication activities between lecturer and students especially in the speaking class. Students who have good interpersonal communication become more active and motivated in communicating when interact with their lecturer to achieve the purpose of speaking learning. The problems on this research are to know interpersonal communication intensity between students with lecturer, students’ motivationin speakingclass and whether there is any interpersonal communication intensity between students with lecturer toward students’ motivationin speakingclass. The population was students of Second Semester at English Department of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences Faculty of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in The Academic Year 2011/2012. The member of sample was 50 students by applying simple random sampling. The data about the interpersonal communication intensity between students and lecturer and students’ motivation were obtained by using questionnaire. The normality test and homogenity test of the instrument was calculated using SPSS for windows 12.0. Mean and standard deviation were used in the descriptive analysis, while hypothesis testing of t-test and regression is used in the quantitative analysis. The main results of this research are (1) the interpersonal communication intensity between students and lecturer can be categorized as adequate level with percentage 42% at the range 51 -65; (2) the students’ motivation can be categorized as high level with percentage 68% at the range 66 - 80; (3) t obtained value (2.423) is higher than t table (1.676). r obtianed value (0.019) is smaller than r table (0.05). It means that there is any positive and significant influence of the interpersonal communication intensity between students and lecturer toward students’ motivation in speaking class. Based on regression test, it has known that coeficient of determination ( R2 ) = 0.426 shows that students’ motivation in speaking class is 42.6 % affected by interpersonal communication intensity between students and lecturer, and 57.4 % is affected by other variable. en_US
