dc.description.abstract This study is conducted to investigate the effectiveness of peer review in improving students’ writing ability of recount text of the eleventh grade of SMA N 7 Purworejo, and to investigate how is the students’ ability of writing recount text of eleventh grade of SMA N 7 Purworejo. The research is carried out at SMA N 7 Purworejo on May 2012. It is experimental research. Here, the researcher takes the data from eleventh grade of XI IPA 2 and XI IPA 3 as the sample of the research. The XI IPA 2 as experimental group and XI IPA 3 as control group. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, the researcher makes some steps: (1) giving pretest to both experimental and control class; (2) applying the treatment to the experimental class and giving material to the control class by using regular teaching namely by giving comments orally; (3) giving post-test to both experimental and control class. To analyze the data, the researcher applies descriptive and inferential analyze using t-test. The result of the research leads to the conclusion that the average score of the students who are taught writing of recount text by using peer review is 82.78 that is categorized as excellent while the average score of the students who are taught writing of recount text without peer review is 71.13. In other word, the use of peer review is effective in improving students’ writing ability of recount text. Third, the t-test of level significant 0.05 shows t- obtained value is 6.69 and t-table value is 2.00, it means that t- value is higher than t-table. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the students’ achievement. Finally, the research findings imply that the use of peer review can affect the students’ writing ability of recount text optimally. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers apply peer review in teaching writing recount text, to are creative and innovative in using various kinds of interesting teaching technique in delivering the materials. The students are expected to be more active during the teaching learning- process, so it can make the students interested and motivated in learning English. Moreover, they will get a better result. For the researcher herself will as of the experiences, she hopes that the thesis will be useful and will contribute some valuable thing to the writers herself and all readers in general. en_US
