dc.description.abstract Speaking is one of an important skill in English Language Teaching besides other skills, such as listening, reading, or writing that is why speaking becomes the most an essential skill to have. Many students feel that learning English especially on speaking skill is sometimes bored. It happens because many teachers can not find their own learning strategy that is interesting for their students. Using Role-Play as a technique in teaching way, the writer hopes that it will encourage students to learn speaking skill effectively. The aim of this research is to know whether there is any effectiveness of using Role-Play to improve the students’ speaking skill at the tenth grade students of state senior high school 1 Pejagoan, Kebumen 2011/2012 academic year. The research population in this study is the tenth grade students of state senior high school 1 Pejagoan, Kebumen. There are students and the researcher takes the students in X1 consists 35 students and X6 consists 36 students as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher uses pre-test and post-test. Furthermore, the researcher uses t-test in analyzing the data. The mean score of the pre-test of experimental group is 66.31 and the post-test of experimental group is 74.08, the pre-test of control group is 65.61 and the post-test of control group is 66.97. Then the t-test result is 6.58. The result of this study shows that the use of Role-Play as a technique teaching is able to improve the students’ speaking skill. It can be known from the result of the t-test is higher than t-table, there is (6.58>1.67). Therefore, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that the use of Role-Play is effective to improve students’ speaking skill at the state senior high school 1 Pejagoan, Kebumen 2011/2012 academic year. Based on the result of this study the writer suggests the teacher to apply Role-Play technique in teaching learning process exactly on speaking in order to improve the students’ speaking skill and reach the higher students’ achievement. en_US
