Abstract:
English parts of speech consist of eight parts. Conjunction is one of the
parts of English part of speech. There are four types of conjunctions namely
coordinate conjunction, correlative conjunction, conjunctive adverb, and
subordinate conjunction. Every conjunction has its own rule to use. English
students have to master every types of conjunction especially for sixth semester
students.
This thesis mainly discussed the students’ ability in using conjunction. The
researcher used test to measure the students’ ability in using conjunction. The
researcher also used questionnaire to find out the difficulty in using conjunction
and the students’ effort in increasing their ability deal with conjunction.
By conducting this research, the researcher found that the students’ ability
in using conjunction belongs to fair category. The difficulties are faced by the
students such as not understand the meaning of the conjunctions, not know and
understand how to use conjunctions, not able to decide which conjunction they
should use, not understand the punctuation related to the use of conjunctions, and
do not know the function of some conjunctions. The effort that students do to
increase their ability in using conjunction like, studying grammar, reading the
books about conjunction, trying to write, sentences using conjunction, reading the
original text from native., learning the use and the function of conjunction, doing
the exercises about conjunction, and asking to their friend who knows better about
conjunction.
