Abstract:
Language has a lot of varieties which is caused by the diversity of the
speaker in an environment. One of the ways to learn the variation of language is
watching film. One of the language varieties is jargon. Jargon means the
specialized vocabulary that is used in particular group, usually formal,
characterized by the usage of terms which are unfamiliar to most people. We can
understand and know about vocabulary used in an occupation field especially
military field, which can be found on film Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia
Directed by Tim Matheson.
The objectives of this thesis are to analyze military jargon found in film
Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia and the implementation in English Language
Teaching. The jargon can be acronym, abbreviation, slang and colloquial which
are difficult to understand for most people who are not the member of military
field. This research is a qualitative research which does not use statistical
procedure, and there is not treatment like in experimental research. The data is
collected in the form of words, not in form of numbers. The technique is by taking
the data found in the movie starts from watching the movie, quoting, identifying,
classifying, and selecting the data related to the military jargon and then searching
for reference related to the subject matter. The researcher uses the library
approach in writing this thesis, using many resources including books and internet
to support the data. And the main data is Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia movie.
The result of this study shows that there are 63 military jargons used in the
film. The researcher finds 45 lexical meanings and 51 contextual meanings of
military jargon found on film Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia. The military jargon
can be implemented in English Language Teaching especially in Sociolinguistics
study by using a learning strategy namely: exploration, elaboration, and
confirmation
The researcher hopes that this thesis will give contribution and opportunity
for the readers. She also hopes that this thesis can improve vocabulary, knowledge
and students motivation in English Language Teaching especially in
Sociolinguistics Teaching.
