Abstract:
There are four skills that have to be taught by the teacher at senior high
school, from the four skills the writer chooses to talk about speaking. Speaking is
considered very important skill since people learn a language in order to use it for
communication. Teacher has to find the best strategies for her students. For
example a dialog memorization strategy.
In order to learn about strategies in teaching speaking skill at SMA N 7
Purworejo, how it is implemented in classrooom activity and the reason why the
teacher implemented those teaching strategies, the writer tried to find out kind of
strategies that is used by the teacher in teaching speaking, the implementation of
those teaching speaking strategies in classroom activity and the advantages by
using such as teachers’ strategy. The objectives of this study are (1) to identify
and to describe the kinds of strategies that used by the teacher in speaking class,
and (2) to know the advantages of using kinds of strategies used by teachers in
speaking class. (3) To know how conducive the speaking class using such a
strategy .
The researcher population involves the tenth grade students of tenth grade
students of state senior high school 7 of Purworejo in the academic year of
2011/2012. The total number of the population is 288 students. The writer uses
the purposive sampling to take the sample of the research. The number of sample
is 32 students that are taken from one class. The research instruments are
observation, documentation, and questionnaire. This research is designed as
desribtive qualitative.
The findings are reported as follows : First, there is teachers’ strategy used
by teacher in speaking class, that is a dialog memorization strategy. The teacher
asks the students to practise the dialog in front of the class without bringing the
script. Second , there are advantages of using dialog memorization strategy. For
example, there are only 28% of the students who state disagree dealing with the
strategy the teacher uses. There are 34% of students who state neutral, 6 % of the
students are strongly disagree. There are 32 % of students who state agree dealing
with the strategy the teacher uses.
