Abstract:
The objective of the research was to find out the level of the students’ writing
skill by using Brainstorming and to know whether teaching writing of descriptive text
by using brainstorming was effective or not for the first grade students of SMA
Negeri 4 Purworejo in 2013/2014 accademy year.
The subject of the study was 60 of the first grade of SMA Negeri 4 Purworejo.
The writer took two groups of the students as the samples using purposive sampling.
One as the experimental group and another one as the control group. The data were
collected by using essay test. The data were analyzed by t-test. The type of this
research is an experimental research.
The result of the study showed that the means of experimental group is 73.94
and it is good category. The means of the students who were taught writing
descriptive text by using Brainstorming was 73.94, the means of the students who
were taught writing descriptive text without Brainstorming is 62.94. It could be seen
from the final result of t-test analysis with stated that the t-value was higher than the
t-table (6.290>2.000). There was a students taught using Brainstorming and those
without using Brainstorming. Having anlyzed the data, the researcher found that the
students’ achievement of experimental class was better than that of the control class.
It means that there are is an effectiveness of brainstorming method to improve the
students writing skill.
