Abstract:
Grammar is one of the basic elements of language. It involves the
combination and arrangement of the words based on morphological and syntactic
rules in to phrases, clauses, or sentences. Grammar leads us to construct the
sentences grammatically correct to convey our messages, so the listener can catch
what we mean in our talking and writing. Understanding and mastering grammar
are very important for the students. Without mastering grammar well, the students
will face serious problem in learning English. To know how far is the students’
competence in identifying independent and dependent clause of the eleventh grade
students of State Senior High School 6 Purworejo in the academic year 2011/2012
and to discuss what kind of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of
State Senior High School 6 Purworejo in the academic year 2011/2012 are.
The competence of identifying independent-dependent clause
appropriately is fundamental matter to be able to produce sentence well. The
researcher’s reason for choosing the topic are to know the students’ competence in
identifying independent-dependent clauses for the eleventh grade students of state
senior high school 6 in the academic year 2011/2012.
The population is the eleventh grade students of state senior high school 6
in the academic year 2011/2012, this population consists 207 into 6 classes.
Sample of this thesis consists of 37 students from the natural science program. It
takes 20% of the total population. The instrument employed test and
questionnaire. The researcher was carried out the data for one day, it was on May
8, 2012. The researcher took 90 minutes in carrying the data of the research.
The test given consists of 20 test items of multiple choices and
questionnaire consists of four questions that is used to strengthen the information
toward the test given to the students. The result of the study, the mean of score is
69.7; its mean of the competence of students in identifying independentdependent
clause belongs to good category. the highest score is 90 and the lowest
score is 55. The range of the score is 35. Furthermore, the standard deviation is
9.04. By doing this study, the researcher hopes the English teacher will be aware
of the problem which faced by the students in producing English sentence well.
And the students should be practice to make English sentence.
