Abstract:
English is an international communicative language. It is used to get along
with other people in the world, including Indonesians. English is also a compulsory
subject that is taught to the students from the elementary school up to university:
however, the common problem of English lesson in teaching-learning process is
about the meaning of each word in English which is called vocabulary.
The aim of this thesis is to describe the correlation between student’s
rewriting story in descriptive text and their vocabulary mastery through rewriting
descriptive text of the seventh grade students at SMP N 22 Purworejo. The researcher
took two classes (VIII.D and VIII.E) as the sample of the research. To collect the
data, the researcher analyzed and described the score of the student’s answer of the
test and present mean of the students. The researcher used a purposive sampling
technique because of limited time. To analyze the data, the researcher used
quantitative and qualitative method. In this thesis the researcher tries to find how far
the ability of the students by doing the test and to find out the kinds of difficulties are
faced by students. And the result of the test is satisfactory, because the mean score of
the students is 72.18 in vocabulary and 64 in wrting test. and it is classified into good
category, and they get the difficulties in finding deducing meaning, making sentence,
and determining part of speech.
The statistical data analysis shows that the obtained rxy is 0.947 while the rtable is
0.254 at the level of significant 0.5. It means that the obtained rxy is higher than rtable,
because they obtained rxy 0.714 is positive. So, there is a positive correlation between the
English vocabularies in the seventh grade students of SMP N 22 Purworejo. Based on the
result of the research finding, the researcher concludes that the mastery of vocabulary has
to be possessed by the students in order that they get the rewriting story in descriptive
text. The correlation also indicates that the better a student masters the English
vocabulary the better he/she can enjoys his reading well.
