Abstract:
This study was conducted under the considerations that eight year students
of SMP N 13 Purworejo need method in teaching-learning process. One method
in teaching reading was using CIRC. In this thesis, the objectives of the study was
to find out whether there was any effectiveness of using Cooperative Integrated
Reading and Composition (CIRC) method in reading comprehension to the eighth
grade students of SMP N 13 Purworejo in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The type of this research is quantitative and experimental. The design of this
research was a true experiment design with pre-test and post-test procedure. The
total population is 219 students of the eight grade students of SMP N 13
Purworejo. This research applies a purposive sampling method to get samples.
The total sample was 62 students. The sample was divided into two groups; the
experimental group was 31 and the control group was 31. Then, the data was
analyzed using the t-test method to find out whether there was any effectiveness
of using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method in
reading comprehension to the eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Purworejo in
the academic year of 2011/2012. There were four steps in conducting this action
research; conducting pre-test, conducting treatment, conducting post-test, and
evaluating.
The computation result of t-test was 4.18. The critical value of t was 2.00
for α = 5% and df = 60. Because t value was higher than the critical value of t
(4.18>2.000), H0 was refused and Ha or H alternative was accepted. Thus, the
hypothesis stated that “there was effectiveness of using Cooperative Integrated
Reading and Composition (CIRC) method in reading comprehension to the eighth
grade students of SMP N 13 Purworejo in the academic year of 2011/2012 was
accepted. It means that CIRC as a method toward the students’ reading ability of
the eighth students of SMP N 13 Purworejo was effective.
