dc.description.abstract Vocabulary is the basic competence that must be reached by students in order to get other competences. It is difficult to master the other competences without mastering and understanding the vocabulary. Without a proportional amount of vocabulary anyone will get trouble in her speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Video Dora the explorer is a kind of media which is used to make students remember their vocabulary. The researcher hopes that teaching vocabulary using Video Dora the Explorer can be students fun, enjoy, and interesting in studying English. Based on the statement above, the purpose of this study is to find out whether the use of video Dora the Explorer in teaching vocabulary for the fifth-grade of elementary school is effective or not. The study is called experimental research. The population of this research is the fifth-grade students of SD N 2 Sucen Jurutengah in the academic year of 2011/2012. The total numbers of the population in this research is 47 students, so the researcher took all the population as the sample. Sample of this research is two classes which are divided into control (V A, 27 students) and experimental group (V B, 20 students). The sampling technique which is used is saturated sampling. The result of the research found that the use of Video Dora the Explorer is effective in teaching vocabulary. The computation of t test shows that the Ha is accepted. It can be proven by the value of t – test. Compared to the value of t-table (9.16>1.68).The highest score from control was 76 and experimental was 88. The highest score was gotten by the student in experimental group after got the treatment. Then, the lowest score was 64. The lowest score was gotten by the student in control group. After the test, the average scores were found that the pre test mean of the experimental group was 58.4, and the experimental has Mean score 79.4 in post test. Moreover, the mean pre test of the control group was 59.70, while the post test of control group has Mean score 66.67.If the value of t test is higher that t table, the alternative hypothesis can be stated that it is effective to use Video Dora the Explorer in teaching vocabulary to the fifth-grade students of SD N 2 Sucen Jurutengah in the academic year of 2011/2012 en_US
