Abstract:
The objective of this research are to know whether round robin method is
effective or not in improving the students listening skill on the tenth grade
students of SMK N Karanganyar in academic year 2011/2012. In order to achieve
the objective of this study, the researcher used experimental research. Then, to
collect the data about their listening ability, the researcher used pre-test and posttest
for each group. The population of this study is the tenth grade students of
SMK N Karanganyar in the Academic Year 2011/2012 that consists of 120
students. The researcher took two classes as sample. They are X AP-2 class as
experimental group and X AP-3 class as control group.
Before giving treatment using round robin brainstorming and without it, the
researcher gave pre test to each group. At the end of the experiment, both groups
were given a post-test. The result of the study showed that there is significant
difference between experimental group and control group. From the calculation of
t test, it can be known that t value was 2.519. T table used was 0.05, and in df
n1+n2-2 = 40+40-2=78, t table was 1.990. Based on that computation, it can be
known that t value was higher than t table (2.519>1.990). On the other words, the
use of round robin brainstorming in teaching listening is effective.
Based on the result of the study, the researcher suggested that the use of
Round robin brainstorming method can be an alternative way to teach the
language learner, especially to improve the students’ listening skill. This result
hopefully would motivate English teacher to use Round robin brainstorming
strategy in teaching learning English in the classroom, especially when teaching to
the level of Upper Secondary school.
