dc.description.abstract Knowing about grammar means “being able to talk about it is we are to do when we construct sentences, to describe what the rule are, and what happens when they fail to apply. Grammar is important because it is the language that makes it possible for us to talk about language. One of the important concepts in grammar is abstract noun. An abstract noun is a word used to describe intangible concepts such as states, events, concepts, feeling, qualities that have no physical existence. Being able to recognize and use abstract noun is important, especially in written communication. This research was focused on analysis of the students’ ability in building abstract noun from adjective based on affixation at the twelfth grade students of MAN 1 Kutowinangun, in the academic year 2012/2013. The object of the study is to find out the students’ ability in building abstract noun and its’ difficulties. It is expected that the research would be useful for the teachers and students in language teaching and learning process. The instruments of the research used are test and questionnaire. The test is the teacher-made test that is essay test that is asking the students to change the adjective into abstract and the researcher gave them the score. The method of the research is descriptive quantitative method .The findings show that the Students’ ability in Building Abstract Noun From Adjective Based on Affixation are as follow: that 6.25% students are able and 37% students are unable and the mean is. The difficulties in in Building Abstract Noun From Adjective Based on Affixation are : 1. Most of them said that they could identify part of speech but they still faced the difficulties in identifying abstract noun, adjective and affixation. 2. Most of them think that grammar was difficult for them although the teacher have used interesting method to teach grammar. en_US
