Abstract:
English is an international language for communication. The needs to learn
English increase rapidly in Indonesia nowadays. Therefore, English has been
promoted to learning since it is the most widely used the language in many kinds
of fields, especially in the field of educations, technology, business, trade, politics,
etc. vocabulary is given emphasis since it is important to help us to support the
four language skills; reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Vocabularies can
help the students to learn English easily and they can do it if they are interested in
English. By using English comic, it is hoped that the teacher will be able to
improving them to learn and pay attention to the material presented by the teacher,
and finally, they are able to master English well.
The objective of this research is to describe whether the use of English
comic is effective or not to increase students’ vocabulary mastery at the eleventh
grade of SMA N 1 Kertek in the academic year 2013/2014.
The researcher used English Comic entitled “Raju and the Money Tree” to
increase students’ vocabulary mastery as a teaching media to increase students’
vocabulary mastery at the eleventh grade of SMA N 1 Kertek in the academic
year 2013/2014. This is an experimental research. In this research, the researcher
took 48 students from the total population 144 at the eleventh grade of SMA N 1
Kertek as the sample. Then the researcher gave pre-test and post-test. The
researcher taught vocabulary by using English comic to the experimental class. To
collect the data, the researcher uses the t-test separated variance.
After analyzing the data, the result of the mean score of the experimental
group is higher than the mean score (75.00>60.42). In addition, the result of tvalue
is 8.01. Based on the 0.05 or (5%) significant level and degree of freedom
46 on the t-table is 2.02. It shows that the t-value is higher than t-table 8.01>2.02.
So, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that the use of English comic is effective
in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery of the eleventh grade students of SMA
N 1 Kertek in the academic year 2013/2014.
