English as compulsory subject is aimed to preparing the student to develop science,
technology and culture, and at making them competent and good Indonesian citizen who
are ready to participate in the national development. This subject includes, listening,
speaking, reading and writing equally. Writing is very important to express one’s ideas in
piece of paper clearly. It will be understood and good when each part of the sentence
connects with each other. That is why writing seems to be the hardest thing to do in
teaching-learning process. The students do not consider writing as leisure and easy activity,
writing often make them frustated. This is because they don’t have an adequate knowledge
and skill which are needed in writing.
In teaching-learning process, mind mapping is very important to help the sudents’
to automatically inspire interest in them, thus making them more receptive and cooperative
in the classroom. They made lesson and presentation more spontaneous, creative and
enjoyable, both of the teacher and the students’. Especially for the teacher, they become
more creative in preparing them teaching-learning process.
In this research the researcher took 59 students as the sample. As the experimental
group, the researcher used class VII F which consists of 29 students. Meanwhile, as the
control group, the researcher took 30 students of class VII A. Then the researcher gave pretest
and post-test to both classes. The researcher taugh writing by using mind mapping to
experimental group and taugh writing in common way to the control group. The researcher
then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test polled variance.
After analyzing the data, the researcher concludes that teaching writing by using
mind mapping is effective. As the fact, the mean score of experimental group is higher
than mean score of control group (82.586>70.00). To see whether the hypothesis was
accepted or rejected, the researcher used SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences)
16.00 for windows and the result of Sig. (2-tailed) were 0.000, and it was lower than 0.05.
So, it can be stated that the hypotesis “the use of Mind Mapping in teaching writing
descripitive text to the seventh grade students’ of SMP N 9 Purworejo in the academic year
2013/2014 is effective” is accepted. |
