Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to find whether the English song as media is
effective or not for improving English pronunciation mastery for the eight grade
students of SMP PMB 1 Pituruh in the academic year 2013/2014.
The researcher applies quantitative method to discuss and find out the
problem appearing in this study. This study can be categorized as preexperimental
research. The population of this research is the eight grade students
of SMP PMB 1 Pituruh and the researcher took 34 students as the sample.
Sampling which researcher used was purposive sampling. The independent
variable of this research (X) is improving pronunciation mastery using English
song and the second variable of this research (Y) is called dependent variable is
the students’ pronunciation mastery. In getting the data, the researcher used
pronunciation test as an instrument (pre test and post test). The researcher
analyzed the data by using descriptive statistic analysis (mean, median, mode, SD,
variance, and the highest and lowest score) and inferential analysis (normality
test, test of homogeneity and t-test as hypothesis).
The result of the researcher shows English song as media is effective to
improve students pronunciation mastery. The increase of the mean score of post
test is higher than mean score of pre test (80.88>57.21). The improvement can be
seen by the result of t-test that is 17.67. Then, the researcher consulted the critical
value on the t-table using 5% (0.05) alpha level significance and the degree of
freedom is 1.671. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table is
17.67>1.671. It means that English song as media is effective to improve
pronunciation mastery at the eight grade students of SMP PMB 1 Pituruh in the
academic year 2013/2014.
