Abstract:
Speaking is one of productive skill. By speaking we can produce many
words or sentences to convey our idea, our message or express our feeling. One of
the ways to improve speaking is IODE model. IODE is an abbreviation of Intake
Organization Demonstration Expression. It is a group instruction activity that
must be done by students in learning. This model is a way of learning to acquire
knowledge and gives pleasant for students.
The Purpose of this research was to know whether teaching English using
IODE model is effective or not to increase the student’s speaking ability of the
first grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Ma’arif NU Pituruh. This research was
conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Ma’arif NU Pituruh in May 2012. The sample of
this research was 30 students which have choosen using the saturated sampling.
The instruments of this research were speaking tests and questionnaire. The
speaking tests were pre - test and post – test. The pre – tests was given before the
treatment. While, post – test was given after the treatment. The data of pre – test
and post – test were analyzed by calculating the means and the questionnaire was
analyzed descriptively.
The mean of pre – test was 76.2 while the mean of post – test was 78.43.
Then the results of pre – test and post – test were computed above to get the t –
value. The t-value is 2.33. The writer uses the 5% (0.05) significance level with
degree of freedom (df) 29. The obtained t-value is higher than the critical value on
the table (2.33 > 1.699). So, it can be concluded that IODE model is effective to
increase speaking ability.
