Abstract:
This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of Board Game in teaching
writing in recount text at the Eighth Grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the
academic year of 2013/2014.
The population of this research was eighth grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year of 2013/2014. The researcher used
purposive sampling technique. The researcher took 64 students as the sample. As the
experimental group, the researcher used class VIII B, which consisted of 32 students.
Meanwhile, as the control group, the writer took 32 students of class VIII C. Then, the
researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The researcher taught writing
recount text by using Board Game to the experimental group and commonly way
method to the control group. Then, the researcher statistically analyzed the data by
using t-test polled variance. The data was calculated both manually and by SPSS
program 13.
After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the mean score of
experimental group was 71.66 that belonged to good category. Meanwhile, the mean
score of control group was 64.41 that belonged to fair category. The result showed that
t-value was higher than t table (4.73 >2.000). It showed that there was effectiveness of
using board game in teaching writing in recount text. Therefore, the researcher’s
hypothesis with 95% of significance level was accepted and consequently null
hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.
