dc.description.abstract In Indonesia, English is taught formally in every school. The government also makes a rule about the teacher who teach English subject. She/he must be the one who had English education background. Actually, there are some English teachers who didn’t have English education background. The objective of this study is to describe the differences between the English teacher graduated from English Education Department and Non-English Education Department especially in teaching reading. The English teachers graduated from English Education Department is the teacher who takes educational English in university to complete their study. In contrary, English teachers graduated from Non-English Education department is the teacher who takes education in Non-English Department. This research can be categorized as the descriptive qualitative research because the researcher describes the result of the research. In this study, the researcher chooses two English teachers with different study background. The first English teacher is graduated from English Education Department, while the second English teacher is graduated from Islamic education Department. The instruments of this research are researcher as the main instrument and observation, interview, questionnaire, and teacher observation form as the secondary instrument. The researcher makes observation to two English teachers and uses the teacher observation form. Then the researcher gives the questionnaire to their students and gives the interview sheet to the teacher. After the data were collected, the researcher analyzed them. The researcher used descriptive analysis to analyze the result of the observation, interview, questionnaire, and teacher observation form. Then the researcher used triangulation technique to cross checked those result. Based on the result, there are no significant differences between those teachers. Both of first English teachers graduated from English Education Department and Non-English Education Department used Indonesian too much in teaching learning process. They also explained the material in understandable way. However, the first English teacher is resourcefulness, more creative, and pronounces the English words correctly. So, the first English teacher had more characteristics of good language teacher than the second English teacher. It can be concluded that the first English teacher is better than the second English teacher. en_US
