dc.description.abstract As a foreign language, English is the one of the important international language for communication. English has four important skills to be mastered. Writing is one of the four language skills must be taught maximally by the teacher to the students. Teaching writing especially narrative text will be more enjoyable if there is a good media used. The teacher should also be creative in using interesting methods such as using animated film in order to make the process of teaching-learning more communicative. The purpose of research is to know whether there is any effectiveness or not of using animated film in teaching writing at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the Academic Year 2013/2014. In order to know the effectiveness, the researcher compares students writing test result before and after taught by using animated film in teaching writing. This research was conducted by using experiment design (pre-test and post-test) two classes of eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo were chosen as the sample of his research has the sample of this research. The researcher took two classes (VIII A and VIII D) as the sample of the research. They were 31 students for experimental group and 32 students for control group. This research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo on 23rd, 24th, and 26th April 2014. The instrument that is used to collect the data is an essay test. The essay test that consist of orientation, complication, and resolution. In collecting data, the researcher uses pre-test and post-test as a technique. The result of the test is satisfactory. The result of the study indicates that use animated film is effective to teaching writing. After calculating, the researcher find that the mean score of control group and experimental group are 73.12 and 82.84. Experimental group mean score is higher than control group mean score. The result of the test shows that t-test is 7.47. The computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is 7.47 > 2.000. It means that the Ha is accepted, and there is effectiveness of using animated film in teaching writing to the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. Based on the research finding, the researcher is able to conclude that there is effectiveness of using animated film in teaching writing at the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year 2013/2014. en_US
