Abstract:
schools throughout the world, included our country. Students in Indonesia are
hoped to have competence in English and they should master English. Because
grammar is the basic of English, the students have to master grammar in order to
master English. It is also important for teacher to use appropriate approach in
teaching grammar. Communicative Language Teaching Approach is one of
classroom approaches used to practice new language. CLT approach serves real
and meaningful classroom practice to the students. The objective of this study is
to describe whether or not using communicative language teaching approach
effective in teaching grammar on the second year students of SMA
Muhammadiyah Wonosobo in the academic year 2013/2014.
The type of this research is experimental research. The number of the
sample is 74. The control group is 37 students of class XI IPS 1, and the
experimental group is class XI IPS 3 which consists of 37 students. The
independent variable is the use of communicative language teaching approach,
and the dependent variable is the students’ ability in understanding grammar. The
sampling technique which is used is purposive sampling. The instrument that used
to collect the data is a test. The form of the test is divided into two parts. Those
are pre-test and post-test. The researcher uses SPSS 16.0 to analyze the data.
The result of the research finds that the mean score of pre-test in control
group is 58.37 and the mean score of post-test is 62.48. While the mean score of
pre-test in experimental group is 57.94 and the mean score of post-test is 75.67.
Then the value of t-test is 8.837, and the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00. It can be
concluded that the Ha “The use of communicative language teaching approach is
effective in teaching grammar on the second year students of SMA
Muhammadiyah Wonosobo in the academic year 2013/2014” is accepted.
