Abstract:
This study concerns with the analysis of vernacular language used by male
and female in the classroom. This study proposes a problem which gender often
speak more frequently in vernacular language in the classroom? And what kinds
of vernacular language the students speak in the classroom?. This analysis is
specially focused on vernacular language used by male and female in the
classroom. Hopefully, this study will be useful for students of English
Department, especially to help them understand vernacular language used by male
and female in the classroom. Vernacular generally describes a language which is
the mother tongue of a group which is socially or politically dominated by another
group speaking a different language and they are often used for relatively narrow
range of informal functions. It generally refer to a language which has not been
standardized and which does not have official status. Vernacular language is
usually used by people to show solidarity among those who come from the same
ethnic group.
This analysis used descriptive method. The data were taken randomly. The
data are collected through tape recording, interview and questionnaire. This study
has several techniques of collecting the data which called instrument. They are:
observation, test, interview, questionnaire, and document. The researcher uses a
questionnaire a technique in collecting the data. Besides, the writer uses recording
technique to get a documentation of students’ conversation. From the data that
have been analyzed, it was found that most eighth semester English department of
Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo students use vernacular language with
their friends both male and female. The gender speak more in vernacular language
is female. There are 21 female students or 65,625% speak in vernacular language.
The students speak in 3 kinds of vernacular language. There are Banyumas
dialect, Javanese dialect, and non-standard Indonesia. Vernacular language used
in any kind of place include in the classroom and it is dominated by Javanese
language.
. The researcher suggests to another researcher to analyze about vernacular
language that involved teacher and students. It is suggested to other researchers
and students of English Department who are interested in similar researches to
discuss about language more deeply. The researcher also suggests requiring the
students to create a “dictionary of vernacular language,” which allows to discuss
language variation, regional and social dialects, etymology, speech-act theory, and
code-switching.
