Abstract:
In the teaching-learning process the students’ success is influenced by two
factors, internal and external factors. Internal factor consists of physical and
psychological. External factor consist of the environment like social life. We need
education as one method and technique to develop the students’ ability and we
need teacher to give motivation. The main assignment of teacher is to create
classroom comfortable and to make the interaction which is motivating the
students to study well. One of important skill to be a teacher is to manage their
classroom and to make class active and have fun but at the same time, the material
can be reached well. In classroom management, teacher must be the manager to
manage the students and the class. The effort to make the classroom comfortable,
teacher can do many kinds of activities like: set the time schedule, set the chairs
where the students sit, set the game to give material, write a diary, and create
classroom discussion.
Freedom Writers as an object of the study in this research is about the first
experience of the teacher. The film was taken from the true story of teacher named
Erin Gruwell who began teaching in 1994. In the Long Beach Americans, at that
time there is a conflict between races and Erin are teaches students. It consists of
various races which are against each other. The objectives of the study are to find
out the methods used by teachers in the functions as a classroom manager and the
application in the real life in teaching method. The writer uses the film as an
object of study.
In this thesis, the writer uses a descriptive-qualitative method of research
in analyzing the topic. Qualitative data is taken as much as possible from the
movie entitle The Freedom Writers by Richard LaGravenese, based on the book,
The Freedom Writers, by Erin Gruwell.
The result of the research revealed that the methods used by teacher in the
function as a classroom manager in the movie are approaching method, seating
arrangement, motivation, game, writing diary, reading story, visiting museum,
modifying classroom, holding event, discussing class, monitoring, and typing the
diary.
The writer gives suggestion; the writer will get new knowledge in
classroom management if the researcher wants to be a teacher. As a teacher’s
candidate the writer must know the problem of teaching-learning process and the
teacher should do the appropriate methods to solve the problem. The teacher’s
candidate can use the methods to create comfortable condition in teachinglearning
process.
