Abstract:
Vocabulary is the main point to learn English. Without having adequate
vocabulary we will get difficulty to learn English. In Elementary School,
vocabulary is the first step to learn English. The students are introduced with
simple things around them, which are familiar to them. To teach vocabulary in
elementary school is not an easy way, because the children have certain
characteristics and need certain treatment. So, the writer try used flashcard as a
strategy to improve students’ mastery English vocabulary in elementary school.
The aim of this thesis is to find out the effectiveness of teaching
vocabulary using flashcard on the students’ vocabulary mastery. The writer used
31 students from fourth grade of SD N 2 Sarwogadung as the sample. The writer
used pre-test and post-test in this research. Before doing post-test the writer taught
vocabulary using flashcard as a treatment. After getting enough data, the writer
counted the data using t-test method.
The mean score of pre-test is 62.97 and the mean score of post-test is
79.10. To see whether the hypothesis was accepted or rejected, the t-test is
consulted to the t-table at the 0.05 significance level. It shows that the t-table is
1.697. The t-test value is 11.95. it means that t-observed was higher than t-table.
Thus, the hypothesis shows that teaching vocabulary using flashcard on the fourth
grade student of SD N 2 Sarwogadung in academic year 2011/2012 is effective.
This result hopefully would motivate language teacher to use flashcard in teaching
English in the classroom, especially teaching English vocabulary to the level of
elementary school students.
