Abstract:
This study were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of jigsaw
method in improving students’ writing ability of descriptive text of the tenth grade
of SMA N 6 Purworejo, to investigate how is the students’ ability of descriptive
text of tenth grade of SMA N 6 Purworejo.
The research was carried out SMA N 6 Purworejo on May 2012. It is
experimental research. Here, the researcher takes the data from tenth grade of X 3
and X 1 as the sample of the research. The X 3 as experimental class and X 1 as
control group that consist of 32 students as experimental group and 32 students as
control group. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, the
researcher makes some steps: (1) giving pretest to both experimental and control
class; (2) applying the treatment to the experimental class and giving material to
the control class by using commonly of teaching by giving comments orally; (3)
giving posttest to both experimental and control class. To analyze the data, the
researcher applied descriptive and inferential analyze using t-test.
The result of the research leads to the conclusion that first, the average
score of the students who were thought writing descriptive text by using jigsaw
method is 62.84 that categorized as sufficient. Second, the average score of the
students who were thought writing descriptive text without jigsaw method is
62.37. In other word, the use of jigsaw method is effective in improving students’
writing ability of descriptive text. Third, the t-test of level significant 0.05 shows
t- obtained value is 4.43 and t-table value is 2.00, it means that t- value is higher
than t-table. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the
students’ achievement.
Finally, the research findings imply that the use of jigsaw method can
affect the students’ writing ability of descriptive text optimally. Therefore, it is
recommended that English teachers are suggested to apply jigsaw method in
writing descriptive text, to be more creative and innovative in using various kinds
of interesting teaching technique which accompany the materials. The students are
expected to be more active during the teaching learning process, so it can make
the students interested and motivated in learning English. Moreover, they will get
a better result. For the researcher will be one of the experiences and hopes that the
thesis will be useful and contribute some valuable thing to the writers and all
readers in general.
